Salcombe 7s Tournament Report

Twomeads played host to a superb day of rugby sevens yesterday as Salcombe RFC welcomed teams from across the region and further afield for a fast‑paced, good‑natured, and brilliantly supported tournament. With over 600 spectators lining the pitch throughout the afternoon, the atmosphere was electric from the first kickoff to the final whistle.

Across 18 matches, the crowd were treated to end‑to‑end rugby, big individual moments, and a level of sportsmanship that summed up everything great about community sevens. The weather delivered exactly what we’d hoped for: blue skies, warm sun, and a perfect surface for running rugby.

Pool Stages: Tries Everywhere

The pool rounds set the tone early, with high‑scoring fixtures and some standout performances:

Baby Rhinos and Bredon Star RFC made an immediate impression with fearless attacking rugby and a willingness to play at full tempo. The Baby Rhinos came together in loving memory of Seb Tooke and did the original Baby Rhino proud in both their games and the support they brought along throughout the day. SRFC would like to sincerely thank them and welcome them into the 7’s family.

Stonegate Barbarians and Thameside Tornados completed Pool B and produced some of the most physical contests of the day.

In Pool A, Salcombe 7s, Clifton Ale Blazers, Savills 7’s and Sporting Blues 7s kept the scoreboard operators busy with a string of high‑energy matches. Salcombe’s speed merchant Tom Langley entertaining the home faithful with some long range scoring.

A special mention must go to Devonport Services’ “Sporting Blues 7s”, who stepped in at the last minute to complete the draw. Their commitment ensured the tournament ran smoothly, and they delivered some cracking rugby on top of it.

The semi‑finals brought the intensity up another notch. Sporting Blues 7’s and Bredon Star both earned their way into the Plate Final, while Savills and Stoneygate Barbarians progressed to the Cup Final after two fiercely contested semis.

The Plate Final was a thriller, with the Devonport side edging Bredon Star 19–17 in a match that swung back and forth until the final play.

The Cup Final saw Savills take on Stoneygate in a high‑quality contest, with Savills ultimately lifting the trophy after a 15–14 victory to secure the title in their 3rd visit to Salcombe 7’s.

Both Thameside Tornadoes and Baby Rhinos deserve huge credit for their first appearance at Salcombe 7s. They brought energy, enthusiasm, and a brilliant attitude throughout the day. Their players mixed with supporters, stayed for the duration, and added real value to the tournament culture we’re proud of at Twomeads.

From the volunteers on the gate and BBQ’s, to the referees, players, and supporters, the entire event showcased the best of grassroots rugby. The standard of play was excellent, the spirit was even better, and the sunshine didn’t hurt either.

Salcombe RFC would like to thank every team who travelled, every supporter who turned up, and everyone who helped make the 2026 Salcombe 7s a standout day on the local rugby calendar.

Emotions were high at Twomeads on Saturday, with a chance at silverware on the line for the 5 handled cup that has been out of reach for the Crabs in over 20 years. Salcombe needed a fast start against a strong Totnes team determined to make sure that they retained the cup. And Totnes brought it. Penalised at the breakdown and communication errors saw the Crabs 17-0 down inside as many minutes and it was starting to look like it was going to be a long afternoon.

Realising Totnes were here to play, was the wake up call Salcombe needed. Now starting to fire, the Crabs needed a quick response. Forcing a scrum penalty, the resulting driving maul and James Lake powered over the line to get Salcombe on the board. Extras not added. Slick hands from the kick return and Adam Squire went in, in the corner. Extras added from Lee Clarke. Toby Woods was next on the board, having swapped from his usual position of hooker to scrum half chalked up another try with his usual darting runs meaning Salcombe went into the break 19-17.

Looking to keep the momentum building, Ciaran Mattocks with an exceptional solo effort also extended the lead. Extras added by Clarke. Salcombe didn’t have it all their own way, with Totnes clawing back the deficit but the momentum was still with the home side. With Totnes starting to concede penalties, they were eventually reduced to fourteen then thirteen. With plenty of space now available the Crabs wasted no time in exploiting it. Stretching the visitors from coast to coast fly half Jon Squire was able to keep the scoreboard ticking after finding a small gap in the Totnes defence. Extras added by Clarke.

James Lake again was able to cross the white wash for the second time from close range, and captain Jay Hannaford also went under the posts after an impressive run and offload from Kieron “Sunny-Bill” Clarke. Only one lot of extras added.

Salcombe’s final try came from the moment of the match winner Adam Squire cut through Totnes defenders and with a collision that rattled the windows at Twomeads took out the final defender allowing returning Matt Gibbons to also get on the score sheet. Extras added from Clarke. Man of the match went to Jamie Laban for his outstanding all round performance.

This was a game played in the best spirit of rugby and filled with emotion and expectation as veteran player, and past captain Lee Clarke was taking to Twomeads for the final time before hanging up his boots and retiring. SRFC thank you for your service and loyalty over the years.

The team would also like to thank the bar staff and The Victoria Inn for the post match hospitality. Next weekend is Easter where the current 1st team face off against the veteran players of past and previous years.

Salcombe were out for retribution this weekend, anticipating a bruising return fixture after their defeat to Plymouth Arguam earlier in the season. The match carried extra significance, not only for the Salcombe squad but also for the many supporters in attendance and to the Tooke family, with the afternoon beginning with a moving minute’s applause in memory of Seb.

The opening moments were dramatic, as what must be one of the quickest tries in league history set the tone. From the kick-off, a handling error was ruthlessly capitalised on by Argaum, leaving Salcombe trailing 7–0 almost immediately. That early setback proved the wake-up call the home side needed. Regrouping well, Salcombe’s defence began to fire, with dominant tackles and aggressive line speed keeping the powerful Argaum forwards at bay. Despite sustained pressure, the visitors were limited to a single penalty, and by half-time Arguam held a 10–0 advantage.

The second half belonged, for a time, to Salcombe, and in particular to young Tom Langley, who looked as though someone had slipped him some extra Haribo at the break. Time and again he cut through the Argaum back line with pace and precision, completing a superb hat-trick that swung the momentum firmly in Salcombe’s favour and brought the home crowd to life.

However, it was not to be Salcombe’s day. In a tense and dramatic finale, Plymouth Argaum struck with a converted try in the dying minutes to edge ahead by a single point, sealing a 22–21 victory at the final whistle.

Despite the heartbreak, the Crabs can hold their heads high. They forced the visitors to fight until the very end and played with real pride and commitment in the shirt. Man of the Match was deservedly awarded to Tom Langley for his outstanding performance, and the team would like to extend their thanks to the bar staff and everyone at the Victoria Inn for their excellent post-match hospitality.

of the Life of Seb Tooke

The family of Seb Tooke warmly invites all who knew and loved him to join us for a Celebration of his Life on Friday, 23rd January.

The service will begin at 3:00 PM at The Holy Trinity Church, Salcombe.

In true Seb Tooke style, we will then raise a glass together at The King’s Arms to share memories and celebrate his life.

Dress Code: Rugby shirts encouraged, for those who wish — in recognition of Seb’s love of the game.

All of us at Salcombe RFC and far beyond are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Seb Tooke. He began his Rugby journey with the Crabs as a mini and went on to achieve amazing things on the pitch. He touched the lives of so many along the way.

I am sure that many of you will have already seen tributes to Seb and I would like to echo every sentiment made in them. I know I can speak on behalf of everyone who has played with him when I say what a truly amazing human being and rugby player Seb was. The kind of bloke who would run through a brick wall for the team and would give 100% in everything he did. Having scrummaged directly behind him for so many years, I can tell you first hand what an absolute titan he was.

Where he shone so brightly on the pitch, he shone equally brightly off it. His ear to ear grin and infectious laugh would instantly brighten any room he entered. He was one of the kindest, funniest and most caring people you could ever wish to meet. One of the best, gone far too soon.

In recognition of this, we will be holding a minutes applause prior to Kick Off in our game at home to Plymouth Argaum this Saturday. We will also be taking donations to CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), the charity chosen by Seb’s family. In the wake of this utterly tragic loss, please look out for those around you and remember that it’s good to talk, especially if you’re feeling down or worried about anything.

Whatever happens out there Seb, you’ll always be my tight head buddy.

It is always a bitter pill to swallow being nilled at home, and league leaders Brixham showed exactly why they sit at the top of the table this weekend. However, despite the scoreline, Salcombe can take some valuable lessons from the match. Against a team that have dismantled opponents by as many as 92 points this season, there is a kind of moral victory to be taken, this was the fixture in which Brixham recorded their lowest points tally.

A hard and fast Salcombe defence stifled much of the attacking play. Throughout the game, the hosts battled relentlessly and made Brixham fight for every metre gained. The determination and work rate on display were clear for all to see and will form a solid base to build on going forward.

Looking ahead, Salcombe will turn their attention to next week’s fixture against Totnes, where they will seek to rectify some of the recurring issues that have affected them in recent games. It is also an opportunity to bring home some silverware, with the 5 Handle Cup up for grabs. The Crabs will be hoping for strong travelling support as they go in search of a positive result.

Schalk Herselman who has played for many years and supported the club in many ways says farewell in his last game. Reaching 50 is a milestone and he has decided enough is enough and hung his boots up for playing for Salcombe. Please come and support and send him off in style, plus live music follows the game. GAME WRITE UP

In conditions far from ideal for the expansive style of rugby Salcombe have showcased in recent weeks, the home side were immediately put under pressure. Receiving the kick-off from Plymstock, Salcombe were penalised for offside, gifting the visitors an early 3 points and raising fears that the afternoon might become a long, muddy battle.

Those concerns quickly faded as the Salcombe pack went to work.

With dominance in every physical exchange, Salcombe’s forwards laid the foundation for the opening try. Tom Harvey picked from close range and powered over the line, though the conversion drifted wide.

Maintaining momentum, Salcombe continued to apply pressure. A small gap opened for returning utility player Marco Alfano-Rogers, who sliced through the Plymstock defence with a superb running line to score in the corner. Lee Clarke added the extras.

Salcombe’s kicking game then pinned Plymstock deep in their own 22, and with dominant collisions and clever offloads, space opened for James Lake to cross untouched for Salcombe’s third try. No conversion followed, but Salcombe had built a commanding lead by halftime.

Plymstock began the second half with renewed energy, pinning Salcombe in their own 22. Their persistence finally paid off as they broke through Salcombe’s resolute defence to score in the corner, narrowing the margin. No extras added.

Salcombe’s response was immediate and emphatic. Alfano-Rogers, dangerous all afternoon, collected the ball and carved through multiple defenders to score Salcombe’s bonus-point try. Again, the extras went untaken.

However, discipline soon became an issue for the home side. With the penalty count rising, the referee was forced to reach into his pocket repeatedly. Reduced to 12 men, Salcombe refused to fold. Instead, they ramped up their intensity, forcing errors from the visitors.

From this pressure, Matt Harvey rumbled over in the corner for Salcombe’s fifth try.

As the game approached its final moments, Salcombe smelled blood. Aggressive defensive pressure forced yet another Plymstock mistake, allowing James Lake to add his second try of the afternoon. Clarke slotted the conversion to close out the scoring.

The final whistle marked more than the end of a well-earned victory. It signaled the close of an era for Salcombe stalwart Schalk Herselman, who chose his 50th birthday as the moment to hang up his boots. The club and teammates extend their heartfelt thanks for his years of dedication, leadership and service he will be sorely missed on the field. Man of the match went to Toby Woods for an all round outstanding performance.

Salcombe also thank the Victoria Inn and the club staff for food and drink post match.

Next week, The Crabs face their toughest challenge yet as they host league leaders Brixham. The club calls on all supporters to pack out Twomeads and help push the boys on.

PLYM VIC

After an enforced two-week break, Salcombe returned to action determined to carry their winning momentum on the road to Plympton Victoria.

Things didn’t start entirely to plan, as an early penalty just three minutes in gave Plym-Vic the first points of the game. However, Salcombe responded swiftly. Prop Matt Harvey dancing over for the visitors’ opening try and, stepping up in the absence of a dedicated kicker, eagerly attempted the conversion himself narrowly missing the mark.

From there, the floodgates opened. Salcombe’s attacking play was relentless, with John Squire crossing twice, alongside further tries from Alex Tuscher, debutant Jay Dean and early replacement full-back Charlie Rawlinson, giving the visitors a commanding lead at halftime.

The second half saw a spirited fightback from Plym-Vic, who scored two tries and converted one to narrow the gap. But Salcombe reasserted control through tries from Jasper Walter and captain Jay Hannaford, who took a quick tap penalty and bulldozed his way over the line.

The final try came from another quick tap, this time by hooker Toby Woods, who caught the defence napping, following an infringement that arguably warranted a penalty try, scrum-half Sam Wilkins casually added the extras with a neat drop kick.

Man of the match went to Alex Tuscher, for his all-round performance and attacking threat throughout the game.

Salcombe returned to winning ways on Saturday with a hard-fought 25–17 victory over long-time rivals Old Techs at Twomeads. Building on the momentum from last week's spirited performance away at Torquay, the Crabs showed grit, discipline (mostly), and flashes of attacking brilliance to secure a well-earned victory.

With Salcombe playing into a strong wind in the first half, Old Techs applied early pressure and were rewarded with two penalties, giving them a 6–0 lead. But Salcombe’s defence, despite being camped in their own 22, held firm with crunching tackles and jackal turnovers from both second rows Dan Sinnott and Jasper Walter. The tide turned with a moment of individual brilliance from Daz Clarke Jnr, who broke through the defence to score in the clubhouse corner. Although the conversion went wide, the home side began to find their rhythm.

Despite Salcombe gaining momentum, an increasing penalty count kept Old Techs in the game. After a yellow card reduced Salcombe to 14, Old Techs capitalised on an overlap to score in the corner — unconverted.

On the stroke of half time, the pressure flipped. Old Techs conceded a penalty and saw a man sent to the bin. Salcombe took full advantage, with Adam Squire finishing well in the clubhouse corner. Clarke added the extras, giving Salcombe a slender lead at the break.

Sensing opportunity, Salcombe came out firing in the second half, now playing with the wind. Repeating Old Techs' first-half tactics, they pinned their opposition back. However, ongoing discipline issues saw further penalties and temporary exclusions disrupt momentum.

Eventually, the pressure told. A penalty kick to the corner set up a driving maul, and peeling from the back of the resulting maul, Toby Woods with a dummy that even fooled the entirety of the pack and with a lurking Matt Harvey who’s been watching too many videos of props who think they’re wingers, chalked up another try for Salcombe. Clarke added the conversion to stretch the lead.

Salcombe’s final score came courtesy of Lee Clarke, taking advantage of Old Techs being permanently reduced to 14 men. A late penalty in front of the posts robbed Old Techs of even a losing bonus point, leaving them with nothing to show for their efforts.

Salcombe now turn their attention to next weekend’s Papa Johns Cup clash at home against Exeter Athletic. While their quick starts and attacking flair remain positives, a significantly lower penalty count will be key to success.

Torquay 2nds

Salcombe made the trip to Torquay on Saturday searching for win, and looking to atone for mistakes made the last couple of weeks. With a full team thanks to some last-minute reinforcements, the boys came out firing and put in a massive defensive effort, holding Torquay to 0–0 for most of the first half.

Unfortunately, with all subs used early due to injuries and then going down to 14 men, the pressure eventually told and Torquay broke through just before the break.

The second half followed a similar story, Salcombe battled hard but started to run out of players, and Torquay ran in three more tries. There was a bright moment when Adam Squire finished off a great team effort to get Salcombe on the board, but further injuries meant Salcombe were down to 12 men, and the game was called early.

A tough day out, but massive credit to every player for leaving it all on the pitch. Next week, Salcombe are back at home against Old Techs — the boys will need all the support they can get. See you there!

Salcombe made the trip to Plymouth Argaum with just 15 players, showing true grit and commitment in the face of adversity. Argaum, freshly relegated and eager to prove their worth, came out firing—but the Crabs stood tall. Despite a string of injuries that reduced Salcombe to just 12 men on the pitch, and several players bravely stepping into unfamiliar positions, the team battled with heart and determination from first whistle to last. Every player who laced up and made the journey deserves immense credit for their resilience and team spirit. Jay Hannon led by example and was deservedly named Man of the Match for his tireless effort and leadership throughout. While the result didn’t go our way, this match will be remembered for the character shown. Let’s chalk it up as a learning moment, regroup, and come back stronger next week. The season is young, and the Crabs are far from done.

After a tough defeat away to Plymouth Argaum the previous league fixture, Salcombe were eager to bounce back and address the issues that had cost them. However, this week’s fixture at home against a strong and well-drilled Paignton 2nd XV side proved just as challenging.

A number of enforced personnel changes due to injuries and player unavailability meant that Salcombe took to the field with several new and untested combinations. Unfortunately, this lack of cohesion was quickly exposed by a direct and physical Paignton outfit who wasted no time in asserting their dominance.

Despite the ominous backdrop of Storm Amy looming over Twomeads, Salcombe did manage to find a couple of bright moments. Two well-taken tries—one from Tom Harvey and another on debut from Alex Tuscher, who was also named Man of the Match—offered some reward for the team’s persistence.

Ultimately, though, it was a tough afternoon for the home side as Paignton ran in multiple unanswered tries, showcasing clinical finishing and solid structure throughout the match.

Salcombe will need to regroup quickly and take key lessons from this performance as they prepare for what promises to be another stern test away at Torquay this weekend. Maintaining a positive attitude and building on the few sparks of promise shown will be crucial.

While Salcombe deserved to win this opening league match of the 25/26 league season, the final score is probably a little hard on Kingsbridge. With 20 minutes remaining Kingsbridge scored to bring the tally to 24-17 to the Crabs and Salcombe supporters began to be anxious. However 19 unanswered points from the home side in the last quarter settled matters emphatically and offered a testament to Salcombe's superior fitness.

The strong south easterly wind had a big influence on events throughout the game and with Salcombe playing into it in the first half their kicking was poor giving Kingsbidge the upper hand. Salcombe defended well but pressure took its toll and the visitors scored wide out after some slick movement of the ball. A superb conversion from wide out gave Kingsbridge a 7-0 lead.

Salcombe recovered quickly and a smart chargedown and recovery of the ball by Lee Clarke enabled him to make good ground before handing on to no 8 Jasper Walters who shrugged off several tackles for a muscular try under the sticks. The conversion by Clarke brought the scores level but Kingsbridge took the lead again through a penalty immediately afterwards. Salcombe then applied pressure and from a lineout on the visitors 22 the ball came to Tom Langley on the wing who went over for a well taken try. The difficult conversion failed but Salcombe were now ahead for the first time,12-10, as the first half closed.

With the wind behind them now Salcombe made good use of it to take the initiative. Smooth hands in the backs allowed Will Oram to go over for an unconverted try and this was followed by a great steal of the visitors lineout by Adam Squire who then ghosted his way through the surprised Kingsbridge defence to score under the posts. With the score now at 24-10 to the Crabs they relaxed as the game entered the final quarter. This allowed Kingsbridge to take advantage of some poor defence and a solo run from their centre brought the score to 24-17 following the conversion.

But this was the visitors last hurrah as Salcombes fitness showed in scoring 3 tries in the final quarter. Squire got his second of the afternoon following some good work in the backs before Clarke was suddenly faced with a gaping hole in the Kingsbridge defence to allow him to touch down under the posts. The conversion brought the score to 36-17 before hard working prop Matt Harvey was in the right place to get the ball after some good hands in the backs. Running round to ease the conversion he dotted down to bring up the final score of 43-17.

Next week Salcombe face what is likely to be a tougher challenge away at newly relegated Plymouth Argaum kick off 3pm. Salcombe then have a week off on the 20th before a home Cup match v OPM on the 27th, ko 3pm.

Salcombe’s season came to disappointing end on Saturday after being outthought but not necessarily outfought by their determined visitors from Bristol.
The Papa Johns Community cup is a relatively new competition but over the last few weeks has provided a few highlights for the Crabs even if it did mean playing on concrete like surfaces and a very sober players awards evening – which was an odd one.

The game started at a frantic pace and Old boys clearly came to play some rugby, a little star struck possibly by the occasion Salcombe slipped into an early 24 point deficit. Changes were made from the Crab bench which had the desired impact. Tom Langley brought on at full back gathered the ball on the half way line and covered half a pitch with an allusive and powerful run, sadly he was brought down just short of the line for a memorable solo try only for Liam Wills to scoop up the loose ball and fall over to score.

The second half brought more of the same action albeit with Salcombe spending more time on the front foot and getting slightly more of the ball and territory. Unfortunately Ashley Down scored a further converted try to edge the fixture beyond the home team's grasp. With likely hopes of a comeback all but gone the Crabs began to play with more freedom and adventure, forcing more mistakes from the visitors a series of penalties meant a driving line out allowed James Lake who had a magnificent game to score a consolation but richly deserved team try. In the end the better team won but Salcombe will be in a better place for the experience and now know to what they should aspire.

With the season consigned to the history books, Salcombe will have mixed feelings some truly brilliant games such as the ones seen in the last few weeks will live long in the memory. However as good as they were there is a feeling of what could have been but for injuries and availability. Things are changing however with a old guard moving on and some great new signings the correct side of 30 giving the squad some energy the possibilities are exciting and Twomeads welcome the test of a new season and the challenges that will bring.

Papa John Cup Third round

Salcombe went into this quarter Final of the Papa John Shield with reasonable expectations but tinged with a tad of concern. North Tawton came second in the sister league to Salcombe's and clearly were not going to be any pushover. This concern was justified when the North Devon side chocked up 12 points before the Crabs had registered on the scoreboard.

All the early pressure came from Salcombe but they just couldn't get across the line. A penalty attempt missed and heartened by this Tawton put together some good play to take them to the home 5 metre line. There awarded a penalty they opted for the charge and eventually went over for a converted try. They then followed this up with another, the result of some lovely handling and backing up to put them 12-0 up.

The Crabs then re-asserted their dominance , moved play to the Tawton line and showing all his class, veteran Jonathon Squire playing at 10 got the ball from a ruck, shimmied, scooted through the gap and cantered the last few metres to the line. Adam Squire converted as the half time whistle blew Salcombe were only 7-12 down.

The second half started much the same way as the first had ended. Squire initiated a move which saw the ball through a number of hands before Hooker Matt Harvey went over in the corner for 12 all. This was followed up by probably the best try of the afternoon when again following soft Salcombe hands, Charlie Rawlinson received the ball 40 metres out. He used his speed to round the opposition and then batter his way over for an unconverted try to put Salcombe in the lead for the first time 17-12.

Two further unconverted tries followed for Salcombe both going to young Salcombe players Adam Squire and Tom Langley who had shown up well throughout the game. While at 27-12 and with only a few minutes left on the clock the match was decided it did not stop Captain for the day, James Lake, putting the icing on the cake by forcing his way over for a converted try too bring up the final score of 34-12.

So this Saturday Salcombe now are in the semi final of the Papa John Shield, playing at home versus Ashley Down Old Boys from Bristol, ko 3pm at Twomeads. Come along and Support the Crabs.

Roseland versus Salcombe

Having had a bye in the first round of the Papa John Shield, Salcombe made the long journey to Roseland deep down towards the Lizard peninsular. They took a good squad but only 2 replacements so supporters were nervous, especially as Roseland had finished 3rd in their league, the equivalent of Devon 3.

That nervousness was justified when after 10 minutes against the run of play Roseland scored a good try wide out, in part due to an absence of tackling by Salcombe. Their excellent kicker then put over a good conversion and gave the Crabs a warning not to concede penalties in a kickable position.

Salcombe quickly replied with a beautiful try of their own. Kieron Clarke picked up the ball from the base of a scrum 30 metres out and set off on one of his bullocking runs. The home defenders underestimated both his speed and strength and as he was about to be pulled down almost over the line he flipped a superb offload to the attendant Toby Woods, playing scrum half today, who dotted down for the score. Lee Clarke converted and scores were now even 7-7. Five minutes later we were all treated to a reprise of that try when the same two players repeated their earlier play, Clarke converted and Salcombe were now ahead 14-7.

Having got the measure of Salcombe Roseland tightened their defence and started to use their big runners to make inroads or to use their kickers to get the ball deep into Salcombe territory. Something of a stalemate ensued with no further score.

The second half gave the Crabs the advantage of the slight slope and more or less from the kick off Salcombe were awarded a penalty which Lee Clarke converted to make it 17-7. Play then became much more even with Salcombe having to put in some heroic defending on their own line against the heavyweight homeside runners. But it wasn't enough and Roseland managed to score wide out which again they converted to bring the scores up to 17-14 to Salcombe. However Salcombe weren't done and added 8 more points as Roseland visibly tired. Firstly Oli Masters who had been ferocious in defence all afternoon caught a Roseland kick in midfield , split the opposing centres and powered over the line in a classy finish. The conversion just missed but at 22 -14 the home side would have to score twice to win. This was made more difficult when Lee Clarke slotted another penalty to move Salcombe on to a 25-14 advantage. The last few minutes of the game were pretty fraught with play close to the Salcombe line and the Crabs were very pleased to hear the final whistle.

Although the game was a bit more nip and tuck than Salcombe might have liked, for a small club to travel 100 miles or so and win away is no small achievement, not least in the organisation required to put a team on the field that far away and congratulations must go to Tom Woods for his meticulous organisation. Thanks too to our generous sponsor who paid for the coach. Congratulations to the boys themselves for a gritty performance and especially to Matt Hurst who had travelled down from Monmouth for the game and who put in some telling hits on the home sides big men.

Salcombe's reward for the win is a home fixture this Saturday 3 May against North Tawton ko 3pm. North Tawton finished 2nd in their league, Devon 3 N and E ,so a lively encounter can be expected.

New Bar Managers

The club is pleased to announce a new and permanent club manager following a period of interim club management. The club thanks Ben Harding for holding the role on a temporary basis as we now move to a permanent appointment.

We are delighted to announce Bonnie and Adam Kouki started the club manager role on Wednesday 2nd April and many of you will already know them from working at the club or as residents of Salcombe.

Preparations are well underway for our festival of rugby over Easter weekend, with a match on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and the Salcombe
7's on Easter Sunday, we look forward to welcoming you to the club.

Salcombe welcomed a large & youthful combined Kingsbridge club side to Twomeads on Saturday featuring an array of their talents from across their senior roster. With the league points forfeited by the away team the match was played as a “friendly” meaning both teams could field unlimited players and substitutes. This was less of an issue for Salcombe having only 20 fit players anyway after an attritional few weeks of matches. The sizeable crowd was then treated to an entertaining first half of rugby which ended 33-5 to Salcombe. However with a 20 point wind shaping the attack of whichever team was playing away from the clubhouse the Crabs were wondering if it was going to be enough in the face of the expected onslaught of kicks that would be surely coming. This didn’t exactly happen and there were no further scores in the match which was soured by a lengthy stoppage following a serious head injury, fortunately the player eventually left the field on his feet to go to hospital and was discharged later that evening with the all clear and a hangover – ironic as he doesn’t drink.

This is a Salcombe write up so you might expect a slight slant that way and they were deserved winners with a superior line out and tactical game curtesy of player coach Eoghan Grace playing his last game (???TBC???) for the club, moving defence and attack around the pitch at will. That said this was a wonderful showcase for our local rugby. Separated by 4 miles as the crow flies, nearly 50 players were able to demonstrate a physical and skillful contest that proves despite testing conditions in the sport grassroots rugby is still alive and well. Salcombe would like to thank the referee and his colleague from the DRRS, Kingsbridge RFC who may have put a fair bit of credit in the bank by blooding so many youngsters who have a bright future ahead of them. Thank you too to the bar staff and volunteers who had their work cut out for them given the number of spectators and speaking of spectators, the players always appreciate a vocal crowd, in support or playful opposition – if you close your eyes and imagine really (I mean really) hard you might just be at Twickenham, except warmer and the bar is cheaper. Salcombe Try scorers were – K Clarke, S Herselman, E Grace, J Hannaford and Man of the Match James Lake.

On a day when Antoine Dupont dropped a scoring pass and Marcus Smith could'nt hit a barn door from 5 yards it is not surprising that lesser mortals can also make a mess of the straightforward game of rugby. This Devon Junior Bowl match was the 3rd time this season that the 2 teams had met and they looked rather bored with each other. What followed was to say the least lacklustre and although Salcombe just about deserved to win in terms of possession and territory, Totnes could have won it if they had kicked their 2 simple penalties. Also if the speedy Totnes replacement wing had managed to score in the 79th minute instead of being brilliantly cover tackled into the middle of next week by Salcombe's full back, Tom Harvey, in what was undoubtedly the highlight of a dour contest. I hope he got Man of the Match award.

Playing down the slope in the first half, Salcombe struggled to turn superiority into points but eventually Kieron Clarke made a penetrating run to link with Liam Wills who got the touch down. The kick failed so 5-0. Thereafter sloppy random kicking and poor tackling by Salcombe let Totnes score 2 tries to go 12-5 up before a lineout and drive move saw Jay Hannon muscle his way over to make the halftime score10-12 to Totnes.

Shortly after the break Salcombe elected to tap and go when awarded a penalty 5 metres out enabling Kieron Clarke to score for a 15-12 lead. Totnes then missed their 2 penalties but made up for it with an unconverted try to put them in the lead 17-15. Lee Clarke then kicked his penalty to make the score 18-17 to Salcombe before the aforementioned highlight, the tackle of the season from Tom Harvey just when the Salcombe support were resigned to losing the game. Talk about Deus ex Machina!

This Saturday Salcombe have a friendly with Peninsular Medics ko 2.30 so come along and give the Crabs your support.

That this was the end furthest away from the clubhouse and large home crowd was a source of comment from spectators, many of whom had enjoyed the pre lunch Sponsors and VPs lunch and were suitably vocal.

Salcombe very soon established their superiority setting up camp in the Totnes 22 and after trying 2 lineout and drive moves which failed, they soon realised their visitors did not intend making it easy for them. However after 5 minutes Totnes had the put in at a scrum about 10 metres from their line which was taken by Salcombe against the head giving no 8 Kieron Clarke the chance to blast over under the posts. Brother Lee converted for 7-0.

Salcombe maintained their superiority despite vigorous Totnes defence and spent the next 15 minutes butchering chance after chance in the main by poor handling. Eventually following a Totnes yellow card Salcombe put together a good handling move which saw full back Tom Harvey score wide out. The conversion narrowly failed but the Crabs were 12-0 ahead. Salcombe continued pressing but missing chances and in one ludicrous instance a player who could have touched down himself decided to pass only for one of the visitors' speedy young backs to intercept and run 75 yards. When in danger of being caught he threw the best and possibly longest pass of the day
to a supporting colleague who scored wide out to make the half time score 12-5.

While still being comfortably in control Salcombe seemed to be playing too much of the game now pinned down in their own half. They didn't look like conceding another try and indeed in one of their rare forays into enemy territory a penalty move enabled Hamish Rooney to touch down and extend the score to 19-5 as Lee Clarke's conversion succeeded. Totnes now played their best rugby of the afternoon forcing Salcombe to concede penalties, one of which was backchat to the ref, which enabled them to move the score to 19-11 and give the home crowd a fit of the jitters as Totnes played well and Salcombe didn't. But when the Totnes tight head infringed for the second yellow, then converted to red, Salcombe took their chance to score two good tries through Lee Clarke and Jay Hannon, both converted to bring up the final score of 33-11.

Next week is a week off before Salcombe travel to Paignton on 1 February for a 2.30 ko. They are taking a bus and any spectators who want a seat are welcome to come along. Details on the website or from Tom Woods.

Salcombe began 2025 with a welcome win following a couple of tough weekends in December. Whilst the performance was not 100% convincing there were some nice flourishes with people playing out of position and some unfamiliar partnerships which all goes in the experience bank.

After a slow start Salcombe got on the scoreboard thanks to a solo break from Number 8 Kieron Clarke, peeling off the scrum, alluding the first up defenders and then racing clear to score under the posts. A second try from Clarke wrestled control from the home side and calmed a few nerves but unfortunately ill discipline punished the Crabs and ruined a lot of the good momentum they were building, this happened repeatedly and meant that any impetus gained was just as quickly lost. One of the better passages of the game saw a flowing move off the back of the scrum spin the ball wide, drawing and passing each man to put wing Oli Masters in the corner for his first of the season. Rugby can often be overcomplicated but can also be very simple as this try proved, ironically its what we try and teach the juniors each week but is so rarely seen in adult matches. The half time score was 0 – 19 to the visitors and the with the wind there was the hope of a few more scores in which to build a favourable lead.

That is not exactly how it played out, with the weather deteriorating and discipline failing to improve the game became more open and allowed Plym Vic to get a small window of opportunity. Following a bonus point try from hooker Woods, finding themselves 24 points down Plym Vic elected to kick for goal reducing the arrears to 21 points. An opportunistic try from the restart extended Salcombe’s thanks to “Farmer” Ben “the Poacher” Goodman capitalizing on some indecision from the Plympton catchers. Once again penalties cost the crabs and a yellow card to second row Rooney who is taking a break from football meant the opposing pack outnumbered Salcombe’s and allow their number 8 to score under the posts which was disappointing but not undeserved. Stand in stand off Liam Wills closed out the scoring for Salcombe with a barraging run ignoring would be tacklers and support runners alike to force himself over the line making the final score 10 – 34.

When Salcombe look back on this match it will at times make for uncomfortable viewing but interspersed with some good play which they will hope to build on in the coming weeks. The important part was always going to be securing the win in awful conditions which can often make things a lottery and in that sense it was job done, there is a definite feeling however of an opportunity lost with multiple scoring chances going unfinished.
Notable performances came from second row Martyn Troupe especially comfortable under the high ball it seemed, livewire full back Thomas Langley and defensive rock Jordan Tebb. Man of the match however went to Kieron Clarke for his two try’s and destructive running throughout.
Another rest week next week before Salcombe welcome local friends Totnes to Twomeads which is always a tasty encounter.

Salcombe faced their age-old rivals Kingsbridge in the annual Boxing Day derby, a cherished tradition that has been celebrated for over a century. Despite last year's triumphant win at home, this year, the game didn't go Salcombe's way, ending in a 41-0 loss. However, the score doesn't reflect the intense battle on the field, with Kingsbridge under immense pressure during the first 20 minutes. A few unfortunate mistakes allowed the home side to capitalize and take the lead.

It was heartwarming to see so many dedicated supporters travel to cheer for the team in red, their voices raising the roof in unwavering support. Once the game concluded, the spirit of camaraderie continued as players and fans alike shared beers and congratulations, and festivities carried on into the night, with many squad members visiting the local ale house in town.

Despite the result, it was a great day filled with community and celebration. Looking ahead, Salcombe is determined to return to their winning form as they prepare to face Plym Vic away. Your continued support would be greatly appreciated as we strive for victory! Let's bring that winning spirit back!

Back to earth with a bump on Saturday for Salcombe when a powerful Ivybridge squad showed why they are top of the league as they overcame a spirited Salcombe defence. For many if not all the Salcombe team this was their first experience of playing on an artificial surface where the bounce of the ball is disconcertingly high. This showed right from the start when Salcombe made a mess of receiving the home side's kick off. The speedy Ivybridge follow up secured the ball and going through the phases they went over for their first try for a 5-0 lead after a couple of minutes.

Salcombe then rallied and gained ground despite playing against a heavy pack before James Lake, the Crabs influential no 8, had to come off with a head injury while the game was only 4 minutes old. Salcombe by and large defended well but slick handling by Ivybridge coupled with a few missed tackles gave them three more tries before half time to bring up a score of 26-3, Lee Clarke having slotted a penalty in reply. For Salcombe the highlight of the half was a shimmying run by Schalk Herselman which eventually set up Liam Wills to go over, only for the ref to decide that he was held up.

From a Crabs' perspective the second half was a more even affair with their pack holding Ivybridge well in the tight. Despite that the home side scored 3 more converted tries including a brilliant length of the pitch run by their tall no 8. In return Salcombe again crossed the whitewash from a lineout peel but again were adjudged to have been held up. However a similar move a few minutes later allowed Jay Hannon to go over for the try wide out. Skipper Clarke put over an excellent conversion for a final score of 47-10. The try was particularly welcome as Salcombe had 2 more players off the field with injuries, Toby Woods with a knock to the head and Jay Hannaford with a damaged knee.

This week Salcombe face 2nd in the table Old Techs at Twomeads, ko 2.30 pm, which will be another testing outing for the team currently plagued by injuries. They will need a lot of vocal support from their supporters.

Following their dramatic win away at league leaders Brixham last week, Salcombe looked to follow that up with a convincing performance at home against a side only 2 places below them and in a fixture that traditionally has always been close. Storm Darragh caused a pitch inspection at 9.30 and in the lee of Salcombe's iconic stand of trees it was agreed to let the match go ahead.

The wind had a huge influence on the game and Salcombe chose to play with it in the first half and following consistent early pressure they got their reward with two tries. Both came from the Crabs' muscular back row barging their way over, one from James Lake and the other from Kieron Clarke. Lee Clarke converted one to bring up 12-0.

At this point Torquay recovered and after some incisive running by their backs they discovered a weakness on Salcombe's right flank and scampered over for an unconverted try. Clearly deciding that this was a good ploy within a couple of minutes they did exactly the same, again unconverted, to make the score 12-10. Salcombe rallied and their reward was a try from the 3rd member of Salcombe's back row, Toby Woods, who wriggled his way over from a good Crabs' drive. This and a penalty well taken by Lee Clarke gave Salcombe a little breathing space with the score at 20-10. Salcombe then scored again through Woods, converted by Lee Clarke, and at half time the tally was 27-10.

Facing the wind the Crabs knew they had to keep the game tight and although outweighed in the pack, they were ferocious in the tackle area winning a number of turnovers. But Torquay used the wind well and set up a position from which their speedy wing ran 60 metres or more for a superb individual try under the posts which they converted to make the score 27-17. Salcombe then tried to use a kicking game to win territory but in the wind this proved fruitless and a better ploy would have been to run it and go through the phases. Eventually the penny dropped and rewarded Salcombe with 2 further tries, neither converted, with a second for Lake and an amazing one from Will Grant coming off the bench in his first appearance after long term injury problems. Playing in the pack he took the ball on the wing, what was he doing there, and from 25 metres out jinked his way over for the most spectacular of Salcombe's scores and bringing the final total to 37-17.

The next 2 weeks will be interesting for Salcombe with games against the current top 2 teams in the league - Ivybridge 2s away and Old Techs at home on 21 December, ko 2.30. Both these teams beat Salcombe comfortably early in the season and it will be a measure of how all 3 sides have developed since. "

In a highly contested game away to Brixham Salcombe managed to end top of the league rivals winning streak. Strong mental attitude from our players prevailed and prevented from Brixham getting into their stride. |Salcombe lead from the start and although missed penalties and strong attacking from Brixham it was left to the final minute when the home side decided to run play out of their own 22 only to be penalised for crossing infront of their post. An easy 3 points was taken thus making the Crabs well deserved victors.

Over two nights, our club is hosting an Emergency First Aid at Work course that will cover lifesaving skills like CPR, defibrillator use, bandaging, and controlling bleeding , among other critical techniques. This initiative includes participation from our dedicated junior section coaching staff, bar staff, and senior section first aiders.

Aligned with RFU Protocols: We ensure our training meets RFU guidelines to provide well-prepared personnel during matches and training sessions.

The course wraps up in early December with both a written and practical examination, ensuring every attendee is proficient and confident in their skills.

We pride ourselves on a strong first aid ethos. Measures are in place to guarantee that everyone at the Club enjoys a safe environment, knowing that our staff and members are trained and equipped with the latest resources. Our updated Medical Emergency Action Plan (MEAP) ensures swift and effective response to any medical incidents.

Both sides will have got plenty out of the fixture and its fair to say that the Uni saved Salcombe's day and for that we are very grateful, hopefully the start of a prolonged friendship. Salcombe looked to build on their win against Plympton Victoria after having 2 weeks off. Receiving kick off in the autumnal sunshine in front of Totnes ex players and VP’s, Salcombe immediately looked to put boot to ball to put it back into Totnes half and make them play out. Totnes not having any of it sent the ball back into the Salcombe half, who decided to run the ball back, an attempted pass intercept from Totnes resulted in a knock on and the first Salcombe scrum. With the Salcombe pack providing a solid platform, and pushing Totnes off the ball for much of the afternoon, this allowed for returning centre Jordan Tebb, to have his first run at a defending line in nearly two years. Muscling his way past two players, and with quick ball provided by scrum half Lee Clarke, the retreating Totnes line was filled with gaps. One of these was exploited by his younger brother Keiron Clarke, who looked to score from inside of the Salcombe half but was caught just shy of the try line, but with a quick pick and go the Crabs were over the try line. However hardy defending from Totnes, the ball was deemed held up so were awarded a goal line drop out. Kicked straight back to the Salcombe forwards who decided to take a rather direct approach ran it straight back into the Totnes 22. A combination of fast hands and feet and Salcombe were again banging on the Totnes try line. Quick ball from Clarke to a waiting back line saw his brother Keiron this time go over for his, and Salcombe’s first try of the afternoon. Converted by Lee Clarke.
Kick off from Totnes went straight out so Salcombe sensing they had the beating of the Totnes pack elected for a scrum restart, picking up a resulting scrum penalty, Salcombe’s well drilled line out set loose the backs, and with fast hands and feet were back into the Totnes 22 but again, dogged defence from Totnes turned it over opting to kick for a line out. This led to a brief spell of position for Totnes, but Salcombe’s hard and aggressive defence had them pushed back into their 22 again, with little or no option but to kick the ball away to Salcombe’s full back Tom Harvey, who showing off skills from a previous life as a footballer, put boot to ball on a half volley and sending the ball back in a cheeky 50-22 for a Salcombe line out. Salcombe’s driving maul made good ground but was pulled down for a penalty. Channelling his inner Johnny Sexton No.10 Eoghan Grace kicked for the corner, but for a freak gust of wind, and kicked the ball dead… Ooops! Again the kick off return was dealt with well with fast hands a hard running, but again dogged defence from Totnes turned it over and putting boot to ball again, sent it back into the Salcombe half, who again ran it straight back at the Totnes line. Making good ground Salcombe were within sniffing distance of the try-line. Spotting a small gap around the breakdown No.9 Clarke made his way off down the line to skip over, only to be told the gap wasn’t quite as big as he’d hoped and somewhere had stepped out into touch.

The Salcombe forwards were again called on to try and disrupt as much as possible at the line out so keeping the pressure on Totnes in their own 22. This worked as again Totnes had to put boot to ball and Salcombe ran the ball back through winger George Wilmot. Fast hands and feet from the Salcombe backs had Kieron Clarke in reach of the try-line, and with a quick pick and go Salcombe’s youngest player on the pitch, Tom Langley was over. Yet again, Totnes’s defence was deemed to have held the ball up. However the referee, eagle-eyed as ever, had spotted a knock-on so awarded a scrum to Salcombe.

A bit of miscommunication between the Clarke brothers, and the Totnes 9 was off down the pitch. This compounded with a knock on and scrum penalty saw Totnes in the Salcombe 22, and with their tails up sensing they had Salcombe on the back foot, put a series of phases together that saw the Crabs scrambling in defence. Thankfully, to the defensive training that they have been putting in this week paid off, Totnes again coughing up possession and opting to kick rather than run the ball was back again in the Totnes half. The next 10 minutes were a bit scrappy from Salcombe, penalties, knock-ons and in accurate passing was giving Totnes the possession they had been deprived of for most of the first half, until seemingly having had their Weetabix that morning, the solid Salcombe pack snaffled back possession at the scrum and from that, be awarded the penalty. Into the corner, driving maul and the backs were on the loose again. From one touch line to another, hard running from Salcombe saw Totnes take step after step backwards until quick ball from the ruck saw prop, Dan Sinnott, crash through one defender and with another hanging off him, go over the try line for Salcombe’s second of the afternoon. Converted by Clarke.

Kick off was dealt with well after the problems that the Crabs seemed to of had in previous weeks until a forward pass and scrum penalty gave Totnes a line out on the Crabs 5 metre line. Called to arms again the Salcombe forwards were more than a match for the ensuing driving maul, and won the penalty, and with a monster kick from Grace, the pressure was relieved. Having got the ball back down in the Totnes half, Salcombe decided to take the direct approach in order to see out the half.

The second half started much as the first ended. A kick deep into the Totnes half followed up by hard running saw Salcombe again parked in the Totnes 22, with no other option but to kick the ball back to the Crabs. This seemed to be the right option for Totnes as, with a dropped ball and a resulting scrum penalty, Totnes were back inside Salcombe territory. The Crabs break from a line out steal had the brakes put on it by a penalty which again, was dealt with by a hard aggressive defence. Salcombe’s third try of the day came off the back of sustained pressure and a scrum in the Totnes 22, where a waiting Jordan Tebb who in a training park move went round the last defender and over the try line. Converted by Clarke. This seemed to be what the Crabs had been waiting for with a 21-0 lead the freedom to play with a bit of flare was there. Continued pressure on a tiring Totnes defence causing them to make errors, saw head coach and 10 for the afternoon Eoghan Grace slip through a gap, and with the bad hip being blamed for earlier mysteriously disappearing, go over in the corner. Converted by Clarke.

The restart saw the first yellow cards of the day one each for both Salcombe and Totnes, so both teams were down to 14.

Salcombe's fourth try and bonus point came after another dominant scrum, again causing Totnes to kick from their own 22. The resulting break and accurate passing had Kieron Clarke with a bit of space to run in and he didn’t waste it, passing two defenders and going in under the post. Converted by Lee Clarke.

The Crabs didn’t have it their own way all afternoon, a series of pick and goes from the Totnes forwards had the so far unbroken defence on the retreat, and with a score that surprised even some of the Totnes team, the red wall was finally breached and Totnes were over the line. Try not converted.

Stunned by this turn in events, a mistake from the restart, kicking the ball straight out, had Totnes back in possession again in the centre of the park. Efforts in trying to turn it back around in the Crabs favour resulted in a penalty which almost cost them another try, with the sliced ball the was destined for touch, ending up in the in-goal area, and but for the experience of Salcombe vet and old boy, Mark ‘Errol’ Lidstone it would have been a Totnes score.

The afternoon was sealed with Salcombe’s fifth and final try of the afternoon. Quick ball out and Lee Clarke finally found the space that he thought he had had earlier in the afternoon out on the wing. Running a good support line through the tired Totnes defenders, he went over in the corner and then added to his score by converting his own try. Final whistle score Salcombe 40 - Totnes 5.

Twomeads saw a resurgent Salcombe this Saturday, looking to bounce back to winning ways after two hard losses. From the kick off Salcombe’s attack looked dangerous and lively in a game that was largely fast and loose.

Salcombe’s first try came after a scrum combined with a well worked backs move and cheeky grubber from 10 Jordan Anderton, pounced on by returning full back Mark Parnowski showing off football skills like Ronaldo to dribble it past stunned Plym-Vic players and dive into the corner. Conversion missed by Clarke.

This was the case with Salcombe’s 2nd try of the afternoon. Strong hard running from centre Eddie willow saw him take on 3 defenders and pop the ball to Parnowski who again went over in the corner. Conversion missed by Clarke. After a mishandled restart allowing the visitors a sniff in Salcombe’s 22, Salcombe were able to clear with a turn over penalty. This trend was to continue for the afternoon.

Salcombe’s 3rd try of the afternoon came from the captain Lee Clarke. After hard running from Salcombe forwards a little show and go snipe from the back of a ruck saw him go in under the posts. He then added to his score by converting it.

Kick off again proved problematic for the Crabs resulting in dropped balls and a turn over. Again the home sides aggressive off the line defence won the ball back with an interception from winger Sam Wilkins. Salcombe’s final try of the half came from Eddie Willows. A pop pass from centre partner Liam Wills and with hips seldom seen outside of a Strictly ballroom, Willows went in under the posts. Conversion missed by Clarke.

The second half started much as the first finished, a kick off mistake giving the visitors possession to put Salcombe on the back foot, and again aggressive defence causing Vic’s to give the ball back to Salcombe. The Crabs 5th try of the afternoon came as a bit of a surprise, a questionable cross field kick to give Vics backs possession and aggressive defence to win the ball back, saw two miss passes and a cheeky back door pass by hooker Matt ‘Littler’ Harvey saw prop Dan Sinnott go over the line in Clubhouse Corner. Converted by Clarke.

Salcombe didn’t have it their own way all afternoon a mis-communication at the line out and a lapse in concentration saw the red wall broken and Vics their first converted try. Kick off had more problems for the tiring Vics team. A team yellow saw them reduced to 14 and a quick tap penalty with a training ground move made space for winger Graham McNicol go over in Clubhouse Corner. Converted by Clarke.

A successful kick off retention, box kick return and aggressive defence again saw the visitors hand possession back to the Crabs. From the resulting scrum saw No. 8 Kieron Clarke have a pick and run from inside the Crabs half, slalom between 3 defenders and go in under the posts. Converted by brother Clarke. Aggressive defence from kick off again saw Crabs in the opposition 22, with a line out into a well rehearsed backs move, the ball ended up in the hands of winger Sam Wilkins who went over in the corner. Conversion missed.

Salcombe’s final try of the afternoon came off the back of the still aggressive Crabs defence after a period of sustained pressure in their own 22. A quick tap penalty from Anderton saw him and centre Willows show a clean pair of heels to the tired Vics defence. Converted by Clarke. Final score 55-7.

It was an odd feeling post match for the losing home team on Saturday. To score 32 points at home but still be on the losing side was a tough pill to swallow, especially when only trailing by a point with roughly ten minutes left to play. Then again if you ship out 50 points at home you don’t really deserve to win and that message will be the one drilled into Salcombe’s players during the coming weeks. If the Crabs aspire to win more matches this season and improve on last year's league position then matches such as this must live long in the memory and serve as a benchmark for future displays as to what is required to truly challenge at the top of the table.

None of this is to say Salcombe played badly, far from it, the performance across the board was a huge improvement in tempo, discipline and aggression from the previous week against a team who routinely have 50 players at training and on this evidence will hurt many teams during the course of the season. The crowd in particular will have been treated to a wildly entertaining match that had everything you can want from grassroots sport, all in the glorious sunshine.

When Salcombe fired they really fired on all cylinders crafting 5 excellent tries each in facets of the game, Graham McNicholl got the Crabs first following a flowing move with fast hand to finish well in the corner, Jay Hannon got the second after driving maul of a dominant line out. Dan Hepburn got on the scoresheet next from close range after some aggressive phase play under the posts, McNicholl got his second after a frenetic counter attack and a mix up by the Ivy back three on their own goal line. Lastly debutant full back Eddie Willows latched onto a break from his own half by Man of the Match Jordan Anderton to beat the last few defenders to the line. All these tried were sadly interspersed between moments of weak defence belittling the more positive elements of the Crabs display.

Unfortunately the lasting memory of this fixture will be he thought of “what if”, what if certain decisions were made differently, what if certain things had been spotted, what if fitness levels were such that matching the opposition’s pace for more than 70 minutes was not just out of reach. Salcombe will take what they can from the positives in defeat, and there are several, but more is learned in defeat and that being the case the lessons will be clear.

Thank you to the volunteers who provided the food and assisted with the match, the referee, the visiting Ivybridge second team and of course all the supporters who made their voices heard throughout. The Crabs travel to old friends Old Technicians next week with a big point to prove, Old Tech’s find themselves coming off the back of a big win and Weston Mill is always a tough place to play so will need to lick wounds, train intensely and come into the game with an attitude of ascendency and fervid appetite to consign this result to the history books.

The first match of the season is always an occasion for teams to generate an understanding of each other as well as act as a barometer of how effective preseason training has been. In this case for Salcombe it proved to have a valuable programme where the hard work put in transposed itself onto the field of play. Unfortunately, fans of hard ground running rugby were left disappointed as the heavens opened at the start of the game creating tricky handling and footing conditions for both teams who had both come with the ambition to play regardless.

Salcombe started the game on the front foot, and it wasn’t long before a flowing backs move put Willmott in to score only for the aforementioned slippery ground to butcher a glorious chance with the try line beckoning. Undeterred, the crabs kept battering away against the solid defence in the Kingsbridge 22 until they were duly rewarded with a close-range effort from Jay Hannaford to settle some early nerves from the visitors. More of the same continued with Salcombe attempting to unlock a resolute defence who tackled hard and scrummed even harder. Eventually the barrier was broken once again, this time from a kick return and finishing with an outrageous dummy from Dan Sinnott before sliding over in the corner.

The halftime focus was for greater accuracy and not to panic in possession, reiterating that slower ball was better than inaccurate passes. Despite the inclement weather remaining there was still an aspiration to play with width and ambition, while ensuring that the already unacceptable penalty count was kept to a minimum.

Kingsbridge started the second half with a lengthy spell of possession testing the Salcombe defence for the first time in the game. When possession was won back clever kicking from Clarke and Anderton pinned Kingsbridge back in their own half forcing them to constantly run from deep. That pressure eventually told with Salcombe winning a penalty in the 22, kicking for the corner and Toby Woods going over from the subsequent rolling maul. Salcombe continued to cough up penalties however a dominant line out managed to bail them out of the harm their discipline was causing them to maintain pressure on Kingsbridge. With options limited a kick was caught by veteran Schalk Herselman followed by a delicious offload to Anderton to breeze over unopposed from 50m.

With the defence tiring and Salcombe in the ascendancy, spreading the play well across the pitch, it was only a matter of time before slick handling and fast ball put Toby Woods through to help himself to his second of the afternoon. With the game won and tired bodies all over the pitch, there was time at in the last play of the game for Kingsbridge to grab a deserved consolation try.

Notable performances were from man of the match Jordan Anderton who dictated the play from start to finish, Jonathan Hawtin, Mark Lidstone, Mark Parnowski and Schalk Herselman rolling back the years to provide impetus and impact both from the bench and on the wing. A big thanks to Kingsbridge RFC for hosting us. Focus now turns to Ivybridge II on Saturday 14 Sep.

Schalk's Summit Challenge!

Recently retired first team player and current Junior Coach Schalk Herselman is planning a huge personal challenge to raise money for the Juniors section and in the process "give a little back" to a club that he says has been very good to himself and his family since they moved to the area in 2012.

Schalk (above Left) is hoping to do a mountain bike ride consisting of 17KM loops on local lanes and downhill tracks passing through Salcombe and East Soar Farm where he lives. The aim is to climb the height of Everest in the process with each loop adding an elevation gain of over 500 metres.

He is hoping to do this continuously starting on Wednesday 4th September at 11am, passing past the rugby club at around 11:25, continuing through the night and finishing on Thursday. For those that don't know Everest is a huge 8849 meters tall which is a huge feat of endurance on a bike and will consist of a total of 17 loops covering a distance of nearly 300Km!

Mattiscombe Farm Camping and BBQ 2024

Once again the annual family camping trip took place this weekend at Mattiscombe fam hosted by Farmer Ben and Megan (www.mattiscombefarmcamping.co.uk ).
Only 3 hardy souls braved the hurricane on the Friday but with the great weather on Saturday arriving so did everyone else for a walk to find the pub and ice cream. Later that evening a communal BBQ, music, children running wild, animal visits and a fire pit were enjoyed by all. Plans are now afoot for 2025 to make it even bigger and better.

The end of an era for Chairman Mark Lidstone

Celebrating SRFC's new honorary life member

At the 2024 Salcombe RFC Annual General Meeting Chariman Mark Lidstone (Errol) announced he was stepping down from the role after 10 years at the helm. The club decided unanimously to make Mark a Life Member for all he has done for the club over the many years he has been involved. A tribute was led by Treasurer Dale Came and Mark was gifted a tankard as a thank you gift.

Mark has been involved with Salcombe since the mid 1970's when he represented the junior section. He was made Captain of the Colts before making his First XV debut in Easter 1979 in a fixture against Old Coventarians. Mark has represented the club for 6 Decades (over 40 seasons!) and rumour has it he will still don a pair of boots should the call go out.

Mark currently holds three long standing records for the club which will be hard for anyone to beat. He has amassed 1000 first team appearances for the Crabs over the 6 decades. In the 2002/2003 season Mark finished the season with an astonishing 337 points. Finally Mark also holds the most points scored in a game scoring 41 points. Mark has played in 3 Havill Plate Finals and Captained the side to a victory against Ilfracombe in 1988/1989 season scoring the winning try. He represented Salcombe in the first 26 years of the Salcombe 7s tournament and captained them to their only tournament win in 1990.

Off the pitch Mark has been on the committee since the late 70's. He organised and ran the Salcombe Beer Festival for many years raising lots of money towards the club. He has been chairman of the bar committee, long term club Director, current Director of Rugby & also coached the junior section of the club for 15 years.

Mark is a well deserved recipient for the Life Member Award for his long service and outstanding contribution to Salcombe Rugby Football Club.

John Sprague has been elected to Club Chairman and we wish John all the best in the new role.

Friday saw the culmination of a season's worth of hard work for our junior section rounded off with a big party before sidestepping into a water fight so the kids could cool off and settle some scores.

Bouncy castles, BBQ, some Beer (for the adults), music and some teary eyed coaches speeches gave the children and parents the send off they deserved and the rest period the coaches will feel they may be entitled to.

The SFRC committee are happy to announce that our AGM will take place at 7.00pm on 23 May 2024.

Details of the announcement and downloads of the nomination forms are also on the Club Website. Hard copies will also be available at the club.

We are asking for officer and all director nominations with a closing date of 14 May. Officer positions: Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary.

We will collate the nominations and by 16 May, will issue ballots (if required) with named candidates that electors can vote on. Ordinary Members, VPs and Players are eligible to vote.

The closing date for submitting ballots and proxies will be 20 May.

At the AGM, votes from the floor will be combined with the ballots to produce the election result.

Nominations and ballots can be left at the club in sealed envelopes or given to an existing officer and addressed to the Club Secretary.

Mini Crabs go from Strength to strength @ Salcombe Rugby club
2023/24

Here is just a selection of the photos taken from the end of season festivals for our under 7's, under 8's and under 9's teams. Add to this our under 6 players who will be raring to go come the start of their fixtures next autumn along with our little nippers pre school players and you can see that junior and mini rugby is thriving at Salcombe.

Next year will be our most exciting season yet as for the first time since a pandemic related pause in proceedings will be the first time that we will run teams made up from school years 1,2,3,4 & 5 with a couple of year 6 students who love the club so much they don't want to leave!

Our ambition as a club and as a set of dedicated coaches is to create an environment where rugby values are promoted but with a spirit of inclusivity that will see your child feel valued in their team and in time being able to represent the town throughout age grade rugby and be claim SRFC as their club.

This wont happen overnight but by instilling a level of commitment - led by the coaches, that belies a club of its size we believe that when your child puts on a Salcombe shirt they wont want to take it off.

If you fancy getting involved as a volunteer adult we have a growing army of committed parents, but more importantly if your child wishes to try us out perhaps as being new to rugby, new to the area or back from a break from the game our juniors train on Friday evenings at 6pm restarting in September. We offer free trial sessions, no annual child membership fees, free match, training and post match wear, complimentary refreshments for children after training + matches and top class local facilities.
We guarantee match time irrespective of ability and all that matters is fun.

Emergency First Aid and CPR training at SRFC

SRFC hosted a save a life session on Tuesday. Attendees were given one to one instruction in recognising a cardiac arrest and unconscious patient. They were given demonstrations on cpr and use of a defibrillator and took part in practice session putting eveything they had learnt into operation. Infant resus was also covering and everyone went away equipped with skills to enable them to assist in saving lives. Thanks to Emma Cater from the ambulance service who delivered a well structured and informative session.

Both teams were great with Salcombe particularly impressing the coaches and parents with great attacking play and valuable contributions from each and every squad member!
SRFC would like to thank Brixham for being such great hosts again, the parents for making trips that aren't exactly round the corner, the the coaches Dan, Simon, Schaulk and Rebekka whose work really looks to be delivering and of course the young players themselves who continue to play rugby in the best spirit and despite some photos showing otherwise do so with a big smile!

The middle Saturday of the Easter weekend 2024 saw the momentous occasion of the 100 ^th anniversary of the traditional Barry Cup fixture between Salcombe and Buckfastleigh. Historically played home and away in alternate seasons between the two teams it has always been a full blooded and keenly contested affair with this year being no different, not least because this years match is likely to be the last, if not ever then certainly for some years until such time as Buckfastleigh can rebuild and reform.

The match itself once underway was more physical than skillful and the sizeable crowd were treated to a battle that rarely saw expansive running lines or innovative attacking plays from either team. Buckfastleigh probably had the best of the first 20 minutes and much of this time was spent hammering the Crab’s try line but for a resolute defence to be more than equal to the threat. Almost as if having blown themselves out the Ramblers allowed Salcombe back into the match in the second quarter with a reverse of the first period being played out. The difference this time was that the Crabs managed to execute two such opportunities the first from Jay Hannaford who scurried loose from the back of a line out and slide through a gap close to the posts and the second from Dom Loomes who took the ball at close range to bisect the uprights without challenge. The second half turned out to be a very cagey 40 minutes, several “disagreements” were dealt with by the referee by the use of yellow cards and nothing particularly meaningful occurred until the final moments when Buckfastleigh scored what everyone hopes will not be their final ever try.

First of all, all at Salcombe would like to thank Buckfastleigh RFC for the sustained relationship both clubs have enjoyed over the years and to the two chairmen for working hard to make sure this particular fixture could take place under difficult circumstances. As always SRFC players thank all the supporters, the referee, junior section for providing mascots, bar staff and volunteers for making Twomeads the place it is on match day.

Notable performances were from Dave Evans on a break from his break from rugby, Toby Woods who was a constant threat in the loose and deadly accurate in his set piece and Lee Clarke who had his personal performance of the year at 10. Man of the match however was Jay Hannaford who put in a robust display in all facets of the game and finished his try with aplomb. Special mention also to former captain James Cooper and Schaulk Herselman out of retirement once again and to another former captain Stu Winzer along with other guests Jack Winzer, Harry Henderson and Dan Gloyns.

Salcombe RFC wish all the best for the future to Buckfastleigh RFC in whatever form that may be and whenever that may be, South Devon rugby is worse off for every club that cannot continue to function and we urge any supporters of the game to get behind their local club before it is too late.

Salcombe made the short journey to local rivals Totnes on Saturday with an increasingly lengthy injury list and some key players unavailable. Despite the fallow squad numbers the quality was still present to make them hope for an away victory to a side at bottom of the table.

Salcombe took an early lead thanks to James Lake who found himself out wide following a break from Wing Oli Masters, the conversion was missed but the Crabs were on the board and things began to feel like they were falling into place. Totnes however had other thoughts and began to use the strong wind to their advantage to keep Salcombe pinned in their own half. The Crabs attempted to play some attacking rugby with some success in the backs but two quickfire tries for the home team followed, one from a chip over the top which bobbled and fell into the chasing attackers arms and one from a penalty kick to the corner and resulting driving maul. A yellow card didn’t help matters at all and the Crabs found themselves 14 – 5 down at half time albeit with the wind in their favour but very much with it all to do.

With the 3 ^rd quarter a scrapy affair with neither team doing very much at all, a break from the back of the scrum in Salcombe’s half saw number 9 Dave Evans run half the length of the field only to be brought down by the finger tips of the final defender, luckily centre Jordan Anderton was present to scoop up the pass and dive under the posts. The conversion and a penalty meant Salcombe had a one point lead before the inevitable happened, Totnes scored in the corner and only had to hold onto the ball for 4 minutes to see out a memorable win. Things got harder for the reds when another yellow card reduced them to 14 for the final moments. Unbelievably Totnes conceded a penalty with seconds left to play, Anderton kicked to the corner, Salcombe secured the line out ball, which was recycled several times before finding its way to Liam Wills to seal a one point win and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in a game that many thought might be a formality at the outset.

To see 30 plus players then leave the field looking quite so dejected was an odd occurrence, Totnes would have been counting down the seconds to a famous victory and Salcombe won a game that many would suggest they did not deserve to win, the truth was probably somewhere in between and the performance from both sides certainly did their current league positions a disservice. As it was though the Crabs brought home the points albeit not the full 5 they were looking for having failed to score 4 tries.

Notable performances were from Mark Parnowski playing in the unorthodox position of Flanker, hooker Neil Elliott who controlled the scrums under considerable pressure and wing Masters who made more yards in first half than in total since Christmas. Man of the Match however was co captain an new dad Dave Evans, playing what he tells us is his last game and whose break in the second half began the process of dragging the visitors back into the match. You will be missed on and off the pitch Dave and don’t hang those boots up too high.

Next Week is the traditional Easter program at Salcombe with a Lockerstash Exhibition match on Good Friday, the 100 ^th and final Barry cup match between Salcombe and Buckfastleigh on Saturday and then the easter 7’s competition on the Sunday.

Nearly 40 of our youngest players took on their counterparts from Plymstock on a wonderful morning of Junior Rugby at Twomeads. Loads of Tries, Tags, Tackles and Team Spirit as the under 7's, under 8's and under 9's all had matches in the sunshine for the first time in ages!

A great morning was had by all, thank you to the coaches, parents, club staff and volunteers who help facilitate match days and training. Thank you to the young players who make Salcombe RFC very proud.

In what was very much a game of two halves Salcombe struggled in the first 40 minutes to impose any sort of authority on a game that history tells us can be sometimes one sided. Effective and disciplined play by the visitors limited Salcombe’s opportunities and as the first half progressed the Crabs got more and more agitated at their inability to effect the score board. Eventually they managed a breakthrough thanks to Jordan Andterton picking off a loose pass before feeding his centre partner Liam Wills to score close to the posts. Plym Vic then failed at penalty shot at goal in response but still frustrated the impatient crabs who knew that they should be making more of an impact on the game. A rare piece of sustained possession and pressure forced the visitors concede a penalty just inside their 22 meter line, the ball then finding its way to flanker Matt Gibbens (recently back onto the pitch following an enforced rest) who cut a neat angle to under the posts without challenge.

A half time score of 14 – 0 to the hosts was not what was anticipated at the outset and Salcombe knew they had to look deep to fix the issues that were holding them back as the potential seemed to be present but not the composure to execute their intent. Orange peel removed and focus renewed, Salcombe got of to a great start with Gibbens bagging his second try, similar to the first but this time bouncing off several defenders before scoring. Another try followed quickly after with a cross field kick from fly half Eoghan Grace springing conveniently for wing Sam Wilkins to gather and sprint clear. Provider turned scorer next as the Crabs began to find their feet, Anderton made a break before supplying Wills who looked like he was going to add to his tally before a no look, out the back, reverse pass to Grace allowed the player coach to score his first try for a good while. More tries followed, Top Scorer Anderton managed one for himself before near identical breaks put over Lee Clarke and then James Lake to score in the corner. Oddly Plym Vic decided to take the points that were on offer at this point and kicked two penalties rather than go for any consolation try, but these points were just deserved for the Plym Vic scrum half who was the visitors man of the match. A seventh and final try of the half for Salcombe was once again set up by Anderton who did much of the hard work before passing to wing Oli Masters, whom he’d ignored all afternoon to provide a classy and well taken finish to close out the scoreing.

With most of the attention on the second half, notable performances came from across the squad, Gibbens was abrasive and threatening all afternoon, Second Row Nick Roberts had his best game in a Salcombe shirt and Clarke finished with a personal points total of 17. Man of the Match however went once again to the selfless Anderton, responsible for much of the good work that led to points.

The Crabs visit Totnes next week in a local South Hams derby which is likely to be another bruising encounter that Salcombe need to win to have any hope of achieving a top 4 finish.

On an afternoon that began cold and became glacial the Crabs negotiated a tricky away match against a Tavistock team who had run many teams close on their own patch this season. Credit first to Tavistock who had the done well in unfavourable weather conditions to produce a playable pitch when their first team pitch was submerged under several inches of water.

Playing down the sizeable slope and with the wind behind them the travelling Crabs tried to make the circumstances count in their favour and began aiming to pin their posts in their own half with territorial kicking and direct running. One such occasion saw centre Jordan Anderton channel his inner Lebron James and smash through a narrow gap to “dot” down just next to the upright doing very well to control the ball as he did so. Salcombe scored again shortly after when another long kick into the back field caused some confusion amongst the defence leading to a loose ball kicked through and gathered by Anderton to get his second of the day. Tavi mounted a fightback at this point and strong running by their impressive number 8 appeared to catch the defenders off guard, fortunately the resulting attacking line out was well defended and cleared back the way it had originally come from. Salcombe ended the half strongly, a trademark interception from wing Oli Masters made valuable yards into the Tavistock half, offloading to Toby Woods who was unlucky not to score himself before being dragged down just before the line only to off load again this time to George Willmott to crash over. A 0 – 17 lead for the visitors but would it be enough now that the pitch had lost any semblance of traction, the wind was against them and going up hill for 40 minutes?

To begin with at least it looked as if defending their lead might be a tall order as Tavi got on the score board early on with a converted try. This revival was short lived however as the Salcombe were able to respond quickly with a try scored and converted by Lee Clarke, this was added to a short while later after a quickly tapped penalty was given to Dom Loomes who went over the line unchallenged from a short distance out. As the Dartmoor light was beginning to fade and the increasingly frozen players and spectators were looking at their watches there was still time for one last attack. Jay Hannaford appearing from a breakdown as if from nowhere with ball in hand ascending the gradient and catching all defenders off guard, just before taking the contact he passed to Anderton grasping the ball tightly to complete his hattrick and bring about the final whistle.

Salcombe would like to thank Tavistock for their hospitality and for their efforts to produce a viable playing surface and the few brave Crab supporters who made the trip. Notable Performances were from the front row trio of Dan Sinnott, Toby Woods and Jay Hannaford who took every opportunity at scrum time whilst turning lineouts into a real weapon with and without the ball to gain territory and steal possession. Man of the match however went to “Michael” Jordan Anderton for his well taken scores and dominant defending this despite dereliction of jug buying duty. Another break week next week before a final run of 4 fixtures including the Easter weekend matches and 7’s competition.

A brave band of junior Crabs travelled to East Devon during what felt at times like a typhoon to play their friends Honiton Under 9s on an increasingly marsh like playing surface. At times tough going, the under 9's scored some great try's, made their tackles and repatriated plenty of mud back to the South Hams to test the limits of their parents washing machines. Well done under 9's and thank you to Honiton RFC, the coaches and parents for making the journey worthwhile!

Salcombe came into what is always a tough fixture under difficult circumstances. Results since January had been largely negative with injuries, cancelled training and unavailability really taking their toll and dogged performances often not getting the bounce of the ball that their endeavour may have deserved. Largely however the Crabs would be the first to admit that since Boxing day they have not met their own standards with sufficient frequency to feel good about the current league position.

With this is mind a squad of 17 (including a bench with a combined age of over 100) assembled early on Saturday to try and make sense of the afternoon and style a coherent plan in order to arrest this mini slump and make good the final quarter of the season.
Salcombe got off to a decent start controlling much of the early line out and easily getting parity against a larger pack who had sought to dominate Salcombe in the reverse fixture. This territory was capitalized upon with a kicked penalty by Lee Clarke to bring up an early lead. More territory and possession saw co-captain Dave Evans playing out of position at outside centre make 3 incursions into the Tech’s half with the opposition midfield really struggling to pick up his runs. One such line break on the opposition 22 saw him unluckily brought down just shy of the 5 meter line only for Charlie Rawlinson to appear ghost like on his shoulder to collect the pop pass to go under the posts.

Old Tech’s responded shortly thereafter following multiple penalties conceded by Salcombe by scoring in the corner, they then doubled that advantage to take the lead with a converted score making it 10-12. This time it was the home team’s turn to respond even with a man in the bin they were able to manoeuvre themselves into the corner thanks to poor discipline from the visitors. The resulting lineout saw the ball bobble around only for the returning Toby Woods – out since December with a troublesome groin, pluck the ball from the air and force himself over the line. The conversion was good and half time brought about a lead of 17 – 12 albeit with a tougher second half to come.

Into the increasingly powerful wind, momentum for Salcombe was hard to come by, another penalty from Clarke edged the Crabs further ahead but this lead was narrowed again by another Technicians converted try, similar to all those that had gone before and one that Salcombe should have been wise to. As the light began to fall so did the red mist, several yellow cards were dished out breaking up the game forcing the visitors to try something different. This slight air of desperation played into Salcombe’s hands and despite conceding a further try they managed to protect the lead with a brilliantly worked push over try and a second for Woods whilst the opposition pack were down on numbers. With a one point lead Salcombe held out for the win, a win that will hopefully instil some confidence going into the business end of the season.

Notable performances from three returning players, scrum half George Willmott, back row/hooker Woods and newly married Mark Parnowski – making his first appearance of the season in the unfamiliar role of flanker. Man of the Match however went to Clarke playing in the 10 shirt and kicking the match winning points when it mattered most and the pressure on.

The players would also like to thank the brave crowd for ignoring the weather forecast to cheer on the Crabs. A further week off next week before a trip to Tavistock in early March where Salcombe can continue to make sure this season ends on a succession of highs before heading off on their European tour.

A bad day at the office best describes Salcombe's match on Saturday against a strong Plymstock side.

The omens didn't look good to team manager Tom Woods the previous Monday as he contemplated the list of injuries and non availability for this game. Even your regular correspondent was sidelined by a family event he had been warned not to miss! But by dint of charm and arm twisting Tom managed to dig out 3 players from retirement and so arrived at Plymstock with 17 players. Grateful thanks go to Matt Hurst, Chris Drew, who played the whole match, and Sam Viles all of whom made a significant contribution.

The Crabs got off to a bad start by making a mess of receiving the kick off which gave the home side a position in Salcombe's 22. A few short exchanges later an absence of tackling saw Plymstock score wide out for an unconverted try. The Crabs then had their best period of play dominating the home side putting together some neat touches which should have resulted in scores but for dropped passes and needless penalties. Eventually however they were rewarded when following lineout possession good handling by the backs and a clever grubber kick from Eoghan Grace enabled the ever combatant Liam Wills to outpace the defence for the touchdown. Lee Clark put over a difficult conversion to give Salcombe a 7-5 lead at half time.

The second half is best glossed over from a Salcombe point of view. Whether playing up the very slight slope and into the gentle breeze had anything to do with it I don't know but Plymstock scored four more tries and converted one of the stream of penalties Salcombe conceded. It is often tempting when playing in Plymouth to feel that referees can be harsh. But this fit young guy wasn't in that category and the penalty count just grew and grew. This coupled with all sorts of mistakes, wrong options and visibly tiring legs gave us all a match to forget. And it could have been so different if Salcombe had played all afternoon in the same way they briefly did when Salcombe, already 22-7 down, executed a lovely backs move to give Wills his second try. But the game ended up with a 34-12 defeat for the Crabs and so we move on. There is no match this week but Salcombe are at home on 17th February to Old Technicians ko 2.30

Salcombe Under 9s travelled to Brixham RFC on Sunday to take part in a mini tournament against an Exeter side and Exmouth. The mini Crabs were excellent in their 3 matches with tonnes of tries, tackles and tenacity. A big thank thankyou to Coach Dan and Coach Simon along with all the parents who made the trip which was a fantastic morning of rugby.

Salcombe were unable to make it back to back derby wins on Saturday despite a hugely physical performance that was sure to leave bruised and battered bodies on both sides.
The Crabs began well in front of a host of ex-players enjoying their annual luncheon, incursions from wing Charlie Rawlinson and skipper James Lake were unlucky not to generate an opportunity of points. Further tactical kicking from backs Eoghan Grace and Jordan Anderton maintained sustained territorial advantage but a number of loose line outs let the visitors off the hook.

Dartmouth then opened the scoring with a penalty try due to a dangerous tackle as their player was approaching the try line. Salcombe bit back swiftly with a penalty from replacement wing Lee Clarke to make the half time score 3 – 7. The next 20 minutes belonged to Dartmouth, 2 yellow cards to Salcombe, both harsh it appeared, gave the away team the advantage which they made the most of with 2 kicks at goal, the first which was successful and the second which missed. Unfortunately the resulting 22 drop out set Dartmouth up perfectly for a try under the posts and a commanding but not unassailable lead. At this point the game seemed to turn, Dartmouth were temporarily reduced to 13 men with 2 yellow cards of their own and another penalty from Clarke reduced the arrears to a margin that seemed within grasp.

With the back line firing and aided by the flank pairing of Matt Gibbens and the retuning Will Grant hammering the defenders, the increasingly fragile defence looked like it might finally be about to break. Twice full back John Squire, at last with a bit of space in front of him, looked to take on the tiring tacklers but each time the touch line coming agonisingly into play and bringing up the final score of 6 – 17.

The Salcombe coaching team had asked for a performance and an aggressive edge that have been mostly lacking since the turn of the year. In this respect they met their target and if the Crabs can bring this type of hostility week after week then they may be able to replicate the type of season that the current unbeaten league champions elect Dartmouth are having as on this display the margin of difference was not a big one. Notable performances from the abrasive Matt Harvey and Nick Roberts - called into the starting line up last minute and who enjoyed his finest display in a Salcombe shirt, Will Grant whose injury problems look to be a thing of the past and Liam Wills who I forgot to mention last week. Man of the Match however went to fly half Grace who managed the game under significant pressure and put in some eye watering tackles.

The playing squad would like to thank as always the staff and volunteers behind the bar and kitchen, the referee and of course Dartmouth. The players would also like to thank the large crown of assembled dignitaries and ex players who made their voices heard and whose support is always valued on and off the pitch. The Crabs visit Plymstock Albion Oaks next week which is likely to be another bruising encounter but one that they will need to win in order to build on todays showing and ensure the seasons goals remain on track.

Salcombe returned to winning ways on Saturday in a comprehensive if not entirely professional victory against South Hams rivals Totnes. In cold conditions the Crabs were able to put together a strong first half performance with tries from Lee Clark, Dave Evans, Jordan Anderton and Charlie Rawlinson. Evans and Anderton’s both being long range line breaks using speed and elusiveness to evade the chasing defenders.

Half time brought a 24 point to nil lead but the very literal and metaphorical feeling that the job was only half done, Salcombe had largely stuck to their pre match game plan and defended well despite a yellow card and things were largely going their way without really clicking into gear.
The second half began in a similar vein to the first with Anderton getting his second try and Salcombe broadly controlling the game albeit not really threatening too much after that try. From here an element of scrappiness took hold and with it some belief for Totnes that they could impose themselves more on the game than they had been already. This belief coupled with an alarming increase in Salcombe penalties meant that the middle portion of the second half was mostly spent tackling one off runners until the pressure could be alleviated. Thankfully a spate of tries towards the end of the match with Anderton completing his hattrick and a second for Rawlinson meant the final scoreline was one that the home team could be pleased with especially with wins hard to come by this month. Another interesting statistic is that despite not having all the results go their way Salcombe have only conceded 1 try in 4 league matches. On the other hand finishing the match with 13 players after 2 further yellow cards and a general feeling that there was far more to offer and too much unfulfilled potential should act as a driver for an improved performance against league leaders Dartmouth who next visit Twomeads.

There were notable performances from second row Dan Hepburn, a menace at the line out and in the air and full back Rawlinson, on the scoresheet for the second week running and unlucky not to be buying the jugs but for being slightly offside at a kick. The man of the match however went to Anderton for his three tries and physicality in the tackle and general leadership in a match that could have gone differently were minds not focused on the task in hand.
The playing squad would like to thank Totnes who they meet again soon and hope their injuries heal swiftly, the referee, the bar staff, volunteers and caterers and to the supporters who braved the cold and wind.

The past players dinner is being held prior to this weekends fixture with Dartmouth and the squad know that with so many famous crabs in attendance that improvements will be needed, however unlike previous weeks those improvements can be based from a much welcomed win and knowing full well that they have many more levels to reach.

For the first time in a generation Salcombe came out victorious in a hard fought and tense match in front of nearly 1000 people all desperate to see the energy and passion that the traditional Boxing Day fixture has become synonymous with.

The opening exchanges were fairly even, however it didn’t take the visiting Kingsbridge side too long to begin to make in roads into Salcombe territory and to edge possession. An early injury for Salcombe centre meant an unforeseen reshuffle of the Crab backline and the introduction of Sam Thomas on the wing – Thomas having previously been promised only a 20 minute run out after just returning from injury.

Kingsbridge then began turning the screw and camped themselves on the Salcombe line however some full blooded defending and a brilliant turnover on their own line saw the Crabs being given the opportunity to clear their lines and find a little breathing space. This seemed to spur on the home team and so began a period of play that saw Salcombe take the lead thanks to a penalty kick from Scrum Half Lee Clarke. They were unlucky not to extend this lead when flanker Jay Hannaford looked to all the world to have bundled over from close range. Unfortunately this was missed by the referee but was mitigated somewhat by a further penalty kick from Clarke to put the underdogs 6 nil up. Kingsbridge bit back hard and narrowed the arrears with a close range try and a missed conversion to bring up a half time score of 6 – 5.

Salcombe now knowing what they had to do for another 40 minutes, began to believe that an upset might possibly be in the air. These hopes were dented somewhat when Kingsbridge began to roll out their vast array of substitutes all with fresh legs and scores to settle. Salcombe’s own bench was no less talented just smaller in number, in fact a late addition to the match day squad occurred at half time with prop Jon Hawtin being coaxed out of retirement there and then – what was promised we will never know – perhaps a chance at making a little bit of hometown history.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first. Clarke hit another 3 points for Salcombe only for the visitors 7 minutes later to take the lead for the first time in the match with a well taken try at close range once the Salcombe defenders finally ran out (conversion unsuccessful). The Crabs did their best to put this out of their minds and concentrate on what had served them well until this point. A couple of long clearances and excellent ball retention put the Crabs into the visitors’ 22. From this point time seemed to move in slow motion, Clarke shaped to spread the ball to the patient backline but instead passed directly behind himself almost telepathically to the waiting Jon Squire who lined up the posts from 40 yards out to hit the first and probably last drop goal of his career to the sound of a huge cheer from the jubilant and well lubricated club house end. For those wearing a red shirt on the pitch and their supporters the next 12 minutes seemed to take an eternity, broken bodies were running on less than fumes and the onslaught of attack in increasingly desperate blue waves seemed to be unrelenting. The feeling of belief by this point however was infectious and Salcombe played out the final minutes with a calmness totally conflicting the internal chaos that each player was feeling. A turnover led to a penalty and the ball going deeper into the Kingsbridge half, at which the belief was at fever pitch. A further penalty conceded by the visitors and the ball going dead with no time to play brought about scenes that few thought would ever happen again.

Notable performances were too many to mention, each of the squad played their part in an accomplishment built on not giving an inch whether with or without the ball. That said some players led by example until they nigh on ran themselves into the ground. Captain James Lake ever the willing runner had more carries in one game than the previous 10 matches, Flanker Hannaford ended with tackle figures well into double figures, Centre Liam Wills was the defensive lynchpin of the backline giving little change out of any Kingsbridge runners. Wing Thomas offered a level of abrasiveness that the visitors often found hard to deal with both in the carry and tackle. Off the field, the match day management team of Tom and Toby Woods did everything they could to flick the belief switch for those on the pitch and build confidence in the face of some overwhelming odds to build to a tumultuous win for the first time on Boxing Day in 21 years that few would have even considered a possibility until moments before the final whistle.

Salcombe RFC would like to thank all players, supporters and the management team of Kingsbridge RFC, and look forward to the return fixture in 12 months’ time. Thank you to the referee who had travelled a long way to ensure the match was able to go ahead. The playing squad would like to thank all of the volunteers that helped the day run smoothly, to Emma Woods and her team of Bar Staff who ensured that fans from both teams had their hydration needs met and to the vocal home support who got behind the Crabs and made sure that no heads dropped even when bodies began to break.
