U8: Salcombe v St Columba & Torpoint

Monday 4 April, 2022, by Mervyn Down

Well what a great day of rugby for our U8s. Fair play to St Columba & Torpoint for honouring the fixture even though they only turned up with 5 players. On that note, we must all tip our hats to both Aussie & Josh who, from the outset, volunteered to play for the opposition. Equally, Frankie Marshall & Jarad who offered for the second half of the game and also deserve us to tip our hats to them. Well done boys, that is what is truly great about rugby!

However, once the game kicked off and Aussie went galloping over to score the 1st try for the Tigers, I must admit I was questioning if this was a good idea!

The second score was again for the Tigers, a fast stepping Charlie from Cornwall, found his way through the Salcombe defence, leaving the crabs 0-2 down. The 2 Freddie’s both then woke up, with Freddie R grabbing Salcombe’s 1st, followed by FG for their 2nd. The Tigers then grabbed a 3rd, before a great try by Jarad. Freddy R then grabbed his second of the day. Salcombe were lucky to find themselves leading at half time, it certainly felt that the Tigers deserved to be in the lead.

The second half saw another try a piece for both Freddies. Both had a good day of scoring, but it must be said that this was the result of some great team passing! The Tigers also scored two tries in the second half, both from equally great running skills. One of which was from our very own Frankie Marshall, who scored his first ever try in rugby, whilst playing for the opposition!

Final score, 6-5 to Salcombe. Well done boys and girls!

Special mention to Aussie, who was voted man of the match by the opposition players. Also well done to both Freddie’s for some great scoring.

The second game was all about the spirit of rugby. Both teams were mixed up and both sets of players showed great respect and support to each other.

It’s worth noting, that in this second game, only Salcombe players scored, with both Freddies topping up their bag of tries.

But there needs to be a special mention to two other players…. Firstly, after finding his way to the try line for his first ever try, Frankie Marshall then scored a further 3 tries to have a total of 4 for the day! Secondly, was Kai, who played extremely well all day, but scored the most fantastic solo try, running the best part of the length of the pitch, and was definitely try of the day for me!

Well done to all you players, hopefully you all had a fun day. See you Friday!
