Operation Neptune
Twomeads part of the D Day Landings

2000 troops arrived in Salcombe in September 1943 and the US Seabees created camps at Twomeads along with other facilities in the town. Many of the troops were housed in huts shown above and in two separate camps one for white and one for blacks which is hard to imagine these things nowadays.

June 4th 2026 marks 82 years since thousands of Allied troops departed from Salcombe as part of Operation Neptune, the naval element of the D-Day landings in Normandy. 66 US naval vessels and Royal Navy ships left for the planned invasion on June 5th however due to poor weather conditions it was delayed 24hrs meaning the men had to endure rough conditions in the Channel.

For many of these young men, the journey from Salcombe was their last. They displayed extraordinary courage and made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for freedom.

Today, we remember their service, honour their sacrifice, and ensure their legacy is never forgotten.

Lest we forget.
